I'm partial to the Outback and Viking models, but they offer some that sport 1/4" stock and full tang handles. At their price point, they aren't bad at all.Īlternatively, for something that requires much less toil and transformation, Condor machetes also have excellent fit and finish, and don't require a hell of a lot by way of modification. These are considerably thinner and lighter, but can be modified in much the same way. For a cheaper (and lighter) model, Colhane also uses a Tramontina. The Ontario (and other similarly heavy machetes) go through harder wood found in North America real well and typically make short work of vines, provided the edge is kept sharp and the handle is smoothed out as to prevent hotspots from forming on the striking hand. If you do this, you'll have a real workhorse of a blade. I'd recommend the Ontario USGI 18", though it takes some modifying - refer to Colhane's YouTube channel for more info on this.
